you look at this last quarter, everything that people made money on in the first nine months of the year - first three quarters - is getting absolutely torched: gold, apple, commodities. why? i think there is some profit- taking for tax planning purposes ahead of what could be this fiscal cliff. > there has been a lot of talk surrounding best buy and going private. is this stock a buy at current levels? > > if schulze can get the deal done, it is a buy at current levels. if he can, absolutely not. best buys entire market is falling apart. tvs are- they're not even going to sell tvs anymore. but if you believe in schulze, and you believe he can get this deal done, then it absolutely is a buy. > you mentioned gold. let's take a look at silver as well. silver had a down day. so, would you buy these at current levels? > > you know, i think at current levels, with volatility in the gvz and vxslv both pretty low, i think i would be looking at buying call options in both gold and silver as i think they have got plenty of room to run. certainly i think in q1 2013. > you are bullish on silve

for a closer look at the markets. good morning to you. we had a nice santa claus rally going on here. do you think that this fiscal talk is just going to kill it? > > no, it doesn't look like it. the trend over the last few days is, we have seen the market up, but we have seen it really kind of accelerate toward the end of the day. so, as news has not come out negatively, people are buying into the market. but what is interesting is, we have seen the vix, or volatility index, the protection of the market, also rise over the last three or four days, and rise fairly significantly. what that tells me is, the people that are still in the market, that have not sold their long positions due to capital gains tax or dividends tax or anything like that, they want and should protect themselves. that is why we have seen the vix rise over the last few days, in addition to the market. > scott, what do you think about this deal of the icy buying of the new york stock exchange? what does it mean to traders? > > probably not much to traders. they are going to have more access to the electronic world

cover story looks at whether this is a trend that may continue in the new year. job cuts nationwide were up for the third consecutive month in november. november would have been lower, but hostess brands' 18,500 layoffs as a part of bankruptcy pushed the number higher. "it's not a reflection of the strength of the economy as a whole." since january, the number of announced layoffs is actually 13% lower than it was in 2011. that's despite a dreadful january and february that saw more than 50,000 layoffs at american airlines, pepsico, j.c. penney, metlife and procter and gamble. "those are very specific company-based layoffs. they're not even sector-based." hostess brands is controlled by hedge funds that have lined up more than a hundred potential buyers for hostess brands' three dozen factories that produced lunchbox staples: twinkies, ho-hos, and ding- dongs. shover of sfg alternatives joins us now for an early look at the market. good morning to you. and are we waiting for qe 4? > > i think we are, and i think we are going to see it. we saw the rally yesterday. i think a lot of that was just expectations that central bank liquidity is going to be with us for quite a long time. > we have had quite a rally in the market of late. what is going on there? > > we had a great rally, especially yesterday's rally, very macro-driven. and what i mean by that - it wasn't like one sector was rallying. we saw industrials, materials, technology, everything going up in concert. it was a very, very healthy rally. > so, what do you sell here larry? or do you just ride the wave? > > if you are in the equity market, i think you need to stay at normal valuations and just not worry with all the noise around you, because it's really priced in. fundamentally, the stock market is undervalued right now because of all the noise in europe, the fiscal cliff, and china. with that in mind, i think your best bet is to stay near normal valuations for 2013. > there is not

multiple for the stock market. that would put the s &p at 1500 so it's really been stagnant and we're just rallying making up for lost ground. what have been the best performing commodities this year and where would you still put some money to work? i think gold actually---even though we had a $28 dollar fall down yesterday. gold had a $150 range up to 1800 dollars. i think gold right now is in a corrective phase probably a good place to start putting your money. everyone should have a piece of it in their portfolio. oil has been inching higher. is this going to ruin the day for holiday shoppers who are now paying less money for gas and all of a sudden we're going to see an increase at the pump? i think yesterday's snapback rally in oil was really just a corrective bounce and let's keep in mind that across north america it's been warmer than usual and so with that there has been more supply of oil and gas keeping the price lower. so to answer your question, i think we'll be okay through the holiday season. what are you doing with your money right now? right now i like boeing, i like o
